District 5 includes the San Lorenzo Valley, Scotts Valley, Felton and parts of Santa Cruz. The winner of this election will replace retiring Santa Cruz County Supervisor Bruce McPherson.
The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors creates laws for unincorporated county areas, sets the county budget and oversees county roads. Each supervisor also serves on the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission, which oversees work on highways, roads, rail and alternative transit.
About the candidates:
Monica Martinez is the CEO of nonprofit Encompass Community Services, the county’s largest health and human services nonprofit. Martinez ran in part on her experience navigating the county’s bureaucratic red tape. Martinez, a Bakersfield native turned Felton resident, has received high-profile endorsements from the likes of Sheriff Jim Hart, Supervisor Bruce McPherson and former supervisor Mark Stone. Martinez would be the first openly LGBTQ+ supervisor in the county’s history if elected.
Christopher Bradford is a small business owner and community organizer. His campaign is the culmination of work he’s done for years in the San Lorenzo Valley to help people navigate government hurdles in rebuilding their homes following the CZU fire, and receiving adequate service from the local water utility. Bradford’s own struggles to rebuild after the CZU wildfire helped inspire him to run a campaign focused on making government work better for the people.
